Air Duct and Dryer Vent Care for Bound Brook, NJ Homes
Bound Brook is a Somerset County borough of 11,988 people, by the 2020 census, packed into 1.7 square miles on the Raritan River. It became a town in 1869 and a borough in 1891, and the southern part of it, downtown included, sits on the river's natural flood plain.

For most of the borough's history the river set the terms. Floods are on record in 1938, 1955, 1971, 1973 and 1996, and Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 pushed the Raritan to 42.13 feet, the highest level there since 1800. Mayor Robert Fazen later recalled 15 feet of water on Main Street, up to the middle of the second floor. The Army Corps of Engineers answered with the Green Brook Flood Control Project: levees, three flood gates and pumping stations, finished in 2016 after 15 years of work.
Since the levees went up, the work has shifted from rebuilding basements to keeping up what was rebuilt. Air duct cleaning here can start in a basement that was gutted once and refitted, and air duct repair on the seams of that refit matters more than the brushing. Dryer vent cleaning in a two-family or an apartment building means several machines, several tenants and one schedule to agree on.
Ida tested the levees, and Main Street stayed dry
When Ida arrived on September 1, 2021, the Raritan crested at nearly the height it reached during Floyd, yet the mayor put the water on Main Street at zero. Two flood gates, one of them on East Street, were closed around midnight along with the Queens Bridge, and the next morning police told residents south of High Street to evacuate.
The damage came through the gaps. On the west end, homes on Talmage and Wheatland Avenues took water after an NJ Transit train stalled in a flood gate that had not yet closed. On the east end, wastewater backed up through service pipes, two apartment complexes were evacuated and Billian-Legion Park was closed. Basements on those blocks took a different kind of water than a river flood.
Sewer backflow is a different kind of water
Water that rises through a floor drain or a service pipe carries sewage. Anything porous it reached comes out: duct insulation, fiberglass board, the vinyl or foil hose behind the dryer. Bare sheet metal can be cleaned and sanitized once the space is dry, and a plumber can fit a backwater valve so the next storm cannot push water up the same path.
Inside the equipment, the blower, the coil and the drain pan hold whatever a flood leaves behind. Mold treatment and removal covers those parts and the ducts attached to them, not the walls around them. Where an air handler sits in a basement that stays humid through August, HVAC UV light installation over the coil helps it dry between cycles, as a layer on top of moisture control rather than a replacement for it.
Apartments, two-families and the landlord's side
Bound Brook rents more than it owns. Census estimates count more renter households than owner households, with a large share of homes in two-family houses, small multi-unit buildings and big apartment buildings. Plenty of the big ones are recent: the 2010s added more of the current housing than any decade since the 1950s.
For an owner or a property manager the work centers on dryers. Each unit's run is cleaned from the machine to its termination, every cap is matched to the right apartment, and tenants get notice before anyone knocks. Where a unit still vents through foil hose, we replace it under dryer vent installation; the CPSC recommends rigid or semi-rigid metal duct over plastic or foil, which traps lint and crushes easily.
Prewar houses and the chimneys above them
About a quarter of the borough's homes predate 1940, by Census estimates. Houses of that age were heated through a masonry chimney, and now it may carry a gas water heater, a boiler vent or nothing at all. An idle flue gathers nests and fallen mortar and lets rain in through a cracked crown, while a working one should carry a liner that fits the appliance using it.
We sweep that flue as part of chimney cleaning, while the crown, the flashing and the liner fall under chimney repair. Air duct installation comes up in the same houses when central air goes into a building that was never ducted.
What a visit in Bound Brook involves
Most jobs start from Route 28, which runs through the middle of the borough, and parking is often on the street, so we ask about driveways and alleys when booking. In a rental we confirm the unit, who holds the key and whether the tenant will be home. The crew goes to the basement first to see how high the equipment sits and whether the return pulls air from the basement itself.
AMG is veteran owned and licensed and insured, and calls to this location are answered 8 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. Our routes also run to South Bound Brook across the Queens Bridge, to Middlesex on the east side and to Bridgewater around the rest of the borough. A free estimate comes first and spells out what the house calls for.

Questions and answers
We live south of High Street. Do the levees mean our ducts are safe?
The levees and pumps changed the odds for Main Street, as Ida showed, but a gate can be blocked and a sewer line can back up. For the ducts, keep equipment and returns off the floor and know which materials would have to go after water.
Our building's dryers all vent on one wall. Can you do every unit in one visit?
Usually, if the manager arranges access. We clean each unit's run end to end, tag which cap belongs to which apartment, and list any run that should move from foil hose to rigid pipe.
Sewage came up through our floor drain during Ida. Can the ducts stay?
Sheet metal can often stay after cleaning and sanitizing, but anything porous the water reached, duct insulation and flex included, should be replaced. We check how high the water rose against the return and the plenum before recommending anything.
Is the chimney worth fixing if only the water heater uses it?
Yes, because the water heater still depends on it to vent. An unlined or oversized flue can draft poorly and hold condensation, so we check the draft, the crown and the liner, and recommend a liner sized to the water heater when the old flue is too big.
