Watchung, NJ Air Duct, Dryer Vent and Chimney Care
Watchung is a Somerset County borough of 6,449 people at the 2020 census, covering 6.04 square miles along the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains, from which George Washington surveyed British troops in Perth Amboy, 20 miles away. It became a borough in 1926, split from what is now Green Brook, and turned into a suburb over the 1950s and 1960s.

The census counts tell the growth story: 1,818 residents in 1950, 3,312 in 1960 and 4,750 in 1970. Census Bureau housing estimates agree, placing more of the borough's current homes in the 1960s than in any other decade, with a second, smaller wave in the 2000s. Nearly four homes in five are single-family detached houses, and natural gas heats most of them, though about a hundred households still burn oil.
That makes Watchung a town of houses around sixty years old, the age when original ductwork starts giving up its seams. Air duct cleaning on a system that age is mostly a basement job, the trunk and the returns first. Loose boots and joints get air duct repair. A dryer that has vented a few feet through the same wall for decades collects lint at the hood and in the hose behind the machine, and dryer vent cleaning clears both.
Sixty-year-old duct systems
A house built in the 1960s usually has a basement furnace feeding a galvanized trunk, branches between the joists and returns cut into interior walls. The original furnace is long gone, but the ducts often are not, and every replacement left a transition piece or a patch at the plenum. Those joints are where leaks start and dust settles.
Some duct systems of that era carry old wrap, tape or insulation that may contain asbestos. EPA guidance is to leave such material alone when it is in good condition and to treat anything doubtful as if it contains asbestos, so we do not brush, cut or disturb suspect wrap. We point it out, and a trained asbestos contractor handles it before any duct work goes ahead.
Central air in a house laid out for heat
In a house that got central air years after it was built, the cooling rides ductwork laid out for a furnace. Heat can get by with small returns and low registers; cooling cannot, so the upstairs runs warm and the system cycles on and off. Air duct installation adds a return upstairs or enlarges a starved one, and sealing the old trunk sends the conditioned air to the rooms instead of the basement.
The coil of a retrofitted system usually sits on top of the furnace, where basement humidity keeps it damp through the summer. HVAC UV light installation over that coil helps between cleanings, and if growth has already reached the coil, the drain pan or the plenum, we take care of it with mold treatment and removal, which stops at the equipment and its ducts.
Fireplaces, oil burners and the flues above them
Houses of this era were often built with a fireplace, and the same chimney may carry a second flue for the furnace or boiler. Even occasional fires leave creosote on the walls of a cold flue, and oil-fired equipment adds soot of its own, so chimney cleaning covers both flues in one visit.
Chimney repair takes in the crown, which cracks under years of freezing and thawing, the roof flashing around the stack, and a new liner when a furnace upgrade leaves the water heater venting alone in a flue built for two appliances.
Short dryer runs with long histories
In a 1960s layout the dryer usually sits in the basement or a first-floor laundry and vents a short way through the rim joist or an outside wall. Short is good, but decades of use leave lint packed at the hood, a flap that sticks, and a foil or vinyl hose behind the machine that has been flattened more than once. The CPSC recommends replacing plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal.
Our dryer vent cleaning brushes out the whole run and clears the hood. Dryer vent installation swaps the hose for metal and moves a termination that sits too low or too close to a window well.
What a visit in Watchung involves
Most visits come in by Mountain Boulevard, Interstate 78 or Route 22 at the borough's southeast corner. Inside, the furnace and coil come first, then the trunk and returns, then any wrap that looks original. A later addition with its own attic system comes second.
We are a veteran owned company, licensed and insured, and reachable by phone 8 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. Watchung shares borders with Warren, Green Brook and North Plainfield, and the same crew covers all three. When you ask for a free estimate, tell us roughly when the house was built and whether it heats with gas or oil.

Questions and answers
Our ducts have a white, papery wrap at the joints. Can they be cleaned?
Not until that wrap is identified. Material like that can contain asbestos, so we leave it undisturbed and suggest testing by an accredited lab. If it tests clean we proceed; if not, a trained asbestos contractor removes or seals it first.
We added central air years ago and the bedrooms are still hot. What helps?
Usually more return air upstairs and a sealed trunk in the basement. A system designed for heat moves too little air back from the second floor, and cleaning alone will not change that. We measure what the rooms get and show you where the air is lost.
The fireplace smells smoky in summer even though we have not used it. Why?
Creosote in the flue gives off odor in humid weather, and when the house pulls air down the chimney the smell comes with it. A sweep removes the deposits, and a tight damper or a top-sealing damper cuts the downdraft.
Our dryer vent exits right above a basement window well. Is that a problem?
It can be. Warm, damp exhaust and lint settle into the well, clog its drain and can find their way back in through the window. We move the termination to a clear stretch of wall and fit a hood with a working flap.
