Chimney Cap Installation in Bridgewater, NJ

Chimney cap installation shuts a flue against rain, nests and blowing leaves while leaving the exhaust a clear way out. AMG Duct Cleaning Bridgewater fits and replaces caps in Bridgewater and the nine towns around it, on brick stacks with one flue or several, on oil-fired flues in Bedminster and Warren, and on the metal chimneys of newer factory-built fireplaces.

The cap is a small part with a large effect, and in this area it has plenty to contend with. Tall trees drop leaves and seed pods on the wooded lots of Warren and Bernards. The ridges above Watchung and Martinsville catch more wind than the valley floor. Older stacks in North Plainfield hold several flues under one crown, some serving a boiler or a water heater and some serving nothing, and a flue nobody uses takes on the same rain as one that works every day.

This page starts with how to tell a cap has failed, then covers stacks with several flues, windy hillsides, factory-built fireplaces, oil flues and the animals that move in when a cap goes missing. If your flue has not been swept in a while, chimney cleaning usually comes first, since a sweep clears what is inside and shows the top of the stack at the same time.

01

How do I know the chimney cap has failed?

A cap has failed when it no longer covers the flue, the mesh has holes or the fastenings have let go. Sometimes you can see it from the driveway: a lid sitting at an angle, a cap missing after a storm, rust streaks running down the brick. More often the clues appear indoors. Water in the firebox after rain, a rusted damper, a squirrel scratching above the fireplace, or twigs falling onto the smoke shelf all point upward.

Binoculars on a clear day will show most of this from the yard, and there is no reason to climb a ladder to find out. A roof visit is part of any inspection when the roof is safe to walk. If the roof is steep, wet or icy, the crew checks what it can from a ladder and tells you what stayed out of view. A cap that fails often leaves a second problem under it, so the crown and the flue get the same look while the crew is up there.

02

What kind of cap fits a stack with several flues?

A stack with several flues usually takes one large cap across the whole top, instead of a separate cap on each tile. On Victorian houses in North Plainfield and the older blocks of Bound Brook, the flues may stand at different heights and sit close together, and one lid set above the tallest tile covers them all. It also covers the unused flue beside the working boiler flue, which nobody would think to cap on its own.

The lid cannot sit so low that it strangles any flue below it. New Jersey's code wants the open area under a rain cap to be at least four times that of the flue outlet, and a stack with a fireplace flue beside a furnace flue has to pass that test for each. The cap or its screen also has to come off so each flue can be swept. Where a single working flue stands alone on the stack, a smaller cap clamped to the tile does the job at less cost and with a lighter look from the street, which matters on a house in the Basking Ridge historic district.

03

Can a cap help a chimney on a windy hillside?

Yes, a cap can help when wind across the top is the cause, though not every downdraft comes from wind. On the Watchung ridges, gusts crossing an open flue can push smoke back down, and a solid lid with open sides breaks that flow. A house below a higher roof or a line of tall trees sees air tumble over the obstacle and drop onto the stack, and a cap softens that too.

A chimney that sits too low, however, needs height rather than hardware. New Jersey's code asks for 3 feet of chimney above the roof penetration and 2 feet of clearance over anything within 10 feet, and a wind-blocking cap does not replace that. Tightly sealed houses add their own pull, with bath fans and a range hood drawing air down the flue. Before a special cap goes on, the inspection checks which of these applies, so you do not pay for one that leaves the smoke where it was.

04

What cap goes on a factory-built fireplace?

A factory-built fireplace takes the cap listed for that chimney, not a general-purpose one. Houses and townhomes from the 1980s and 1990s in Bridgewater, Bernards, Warren and The Hills often have a metal pipe inside a framed chase, and the pipe, the firebox and the top were tested together. A label on the unit, often inside the firebox or behind a grille, names the maker and the model, and that is the starting point for any replacement.

The cap sits above the chase cover and the storm collar, and those three parts share the work of keeping water out. Rain that gets past a rusted cover soaks the pipe and the framing around it, and a new cap alone will not stop it. When the chase top is failing, a heavier or rust-resistant cover usually belongs on the same job. If the townhome belongs to an association, check who controls the roof and the exterior before booking the work.

05

Why does a cap on an oil flue take extra attention?

An oil burner sends soot and scale up its flue every season, and that buildup can plug a fine cap screen until the burner loses draft. Bedminster has the largest share of oil heat in this area, beyond the reach of the gas mains in much of the township, and Warren and Watchung keep some oil burners too. On those flues the screen is checked and brushed whenever the flue is swept, and a mesh that keeps clogging is a reason to look at a different cap.

Metal matters here as well, since flue gas residue is hard on thin steel. Gas flues raise a related concern on the old masonry chimneys of the boroughs. The cool, wet exhaust of a gas water heater will sit under a cap and rust a thin one from below. A stainless cap with an open area suited to the flue holds up better in either case.

06

Will a new cap keep squirrels and birds out?

A cap with sound mesh keeps animals out of the flue, provided it is fastened tight and nothing is already living inside. Screen openings are limited to 1/2 inch under the code for a spark arrestor, and that spacing also stops birds and squirrels. The flue has to be cleared first, because a nest left under a new cap is still fuel and a blockage. Listen for scratching before you book, and tell the office if you hear it.

Most cap work starts as a line in an inspection, with roof photographs and an itemized estimate that costs nothing. AMG, which is veteran owned, licensed and insured (NJ HIC 13VH13654300), answers cap calls 8 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. When a storm takes a cap in the middle of winter, it can usually go back on without waiting for warm weather, since no mortar has to cure. If the crown under it has cracked, chimney crown repair waits for milder days.

Questions and answers

A storm blew the cap off. Is the chimney safe to use until it is replaced?

Usually, as long as the flue is clear and nothing fell into it. Check that the damper still moves, and watch for debris in the firebox. The bigger risk is rain and animals, so book the replacement soon, and have the flue looked at if the cap landed inside.

Can a cap go on an old chimney with no flue tile showing?

Yes. Where no tile stands above the crown, a cap that fastens to the brick or the crown usually fits. The evaluation also checks why no tile shows, since some older stacks were never lined, and that affects how the flue can be used.

What does a new chimney cap cost around Bridgewater?

It depends on the number and size of flues, the metal and the height of the roof. A clamped cap on one flue is a smaller job than a wide lid across a Victorian stack. AMG measures first and gives a free estimate.

Our cap screen keeps clogging. What is going on?

Soot, creosote or seed pods are collecting on the mesh, and an oil burner or a fireplace burning damp wood makes it worse. Clogged mesh slows the draft, so it has to be brushed clean. If it keeps happening, a cap with more open area may suit the flue better.

Our Hills townhome has a metal chimney. Do we call the association first?

Usually, yes. Many associations control the roof and every opening in it, so a new cap or chase cover may need approval. Ask who owns the chimney top, and we can provide the scope in writing for that review.
